Dr. Diana Hill is a clinical psychologist, executive consultant, and international trainer who teaches a secular, compassion-based approach to meditation. She has meditated for over 25 years and has learned directly from Thich Nhat Hanh, Jack Kornfield, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Trudy Goodman, and Rick Hanson. Her style is warm, gentle, and non-dual, and it is accessible to all levels.
Her work centers on Wise Effort, which she first met at 19 on a retreat at Plum Village in France, where Thich Nhat Hanh taught that a life grows in the direction of what you repeatedly water. She came to understand it more fully in graduate school, after a relapse into bulimia and time away at Eldorado Mountain Yoga Ashram. She earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Colorado Boulder in collaboration with Stanford University, and her research turned to mindfulness and acceptance-based interventions for bulimia nervosa, in collaboration with Debra Safer.
The Wise Effort method draws on psychological flexibility and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Diana is a lead trainer in ACT alongside its originator, Steven Hayes. The method asks people to be curious, open, and focused, so that their energy goes toward what matters to them. She offers it to individuals, leaders, organizations, and teams through consulting, workshops, keynotes, courses, and retreats.
Diana has taught meditation at InsightLA, Insight Timer, Blue Spirit Costa Rica, and Yoga Soup, and was a lead instructor and curriculum developer for the UC Climate Initiative research program. She hosts the Wise Effort podcast, where she talks with scientists, authors, and spiritual teachers, and she leads Sangha, a weekly talk and meditation for a global online community, with a monthly gathering in Santa Barbara. She is the author of The Self-Compassion Daily Journal and The ACT Daily Journal. She also wrote I Know I Should Exercise, But… with Katy Bowman, and a book titled Wise Effort.
Worth Knowing
Diana Hill is a clinical psychologist, meditation teacher, and author who has spent over 25 years synthesizing Buddhist practice with Western psychology to help people clarify where their energy actually goes versus where it matters. Her framework, called the Wise Effort method, emerged from decades of meditation retreats (notably at Thich Nhat Hanh's Plum Village monastery) and rigorous doctoral research at the University of Colorado Boulder on acceptance-based interventions for eating disorders. She works with individuals, leaders, and teams facing pivotal decisions or uncertainty—people who feel scattered and want a secular, empirically-grounded approach to focus and fulfillment. Her audience appreciates that she doesn't traffic in vague spiritual rhetoric; instead, she grounds her teaching in both neuroscience and the psychological processes that either narrow or expand a life. She's been featured in NPR, the Wall Street Journal, Woman's Day, and Real Simple, reaching readers who want credible guidance without dogma.
