Where Do Thoughts Come From?Collective Mind & Awareness

Thoughts may not be personal—they often arise from a collective human consciousness like "thought forms" or "bubbles" in an energetic field. When you feel jealousy, fear, anger, or sadness, you are experiencing universal human patterns that arise in response to resonance within your own mind. True freedom comes not from fighting thoughts, but from becoming aware that you are not your thoughts. This awareness itself contributes to raising collective consciousness and reveals your actual power, which lies in presence and observation rather than identification with mental patterns.

Are Your Thoughts Actually Your Own?

The question "Where do our thoughts come from?" seems obvious on its surface, yet it opens into something far deeper. Most people recognize certain thoughts—jealousy, competition, fear of threat—as patterns they've carried for years, possibly without ever truly claiming them as their own. A common experience is waking in the middle of the night with a thought or anxiety that feels both intimate and foreign. Is this simply the condition of being alive, or is something else happening?

Rather than chase this question into philosophy, there is a more practical concern. The Buddha was once asked a similar question and responded with a parable: a man has been shot with an arrow and before removing it insists on discovering where the arrow came from, who shot it, and why. Before you investigate the origin of all suffering and all thought, the Buddha suggested, remove the arrow. This teaching is fundamentally practical—deal with the suffering itself rather than getting lost in its genealogy.

What Is the Collective Mind?

Beyond the Buddha's pragmatic instruction lies a more complete answer: there exists such a thing as a collective mind. Many—perhaps most—of the thoughts you experience are not uniquely yours. They arise from what might be called a collective consciousness, a shared mental field of humanity. To use an imperfect but useful metaphor, thoughts behave like bubbles or energetic entities floating through this field.

Here is how this mechanism works: A thought form exists in the collective mind. If that form resonates with any negativity within you—even something small, like mild irritation at something someone said—the thought form amplifies. The bubble drifts toward that resonance, and before you know it, the irritation has grown into something much larger. You have connected with the universal mind, and it moves through you. The thought that arrives is not inventing itself within your brain; rather, it is an energy pattern that found a match in your current state.

Why Emotions Feel Personal But Aren't

Consider an emotion like anger, sadness, jealousy, or fear. When it arises, it feels completely personal. "I am angry because of what happened to me." Yet the anger itself—the raw emotional quality—is identical to the anger every other human experiences. The stories attached to it may differ: you are angry about your job, another person about their relationship, a third about politics. But the anger, the emotional substance, is the same in everyone. It is a human emotion, a pattern in collective consciousness, not a personal creation.

The mind then attaches this universal emotion to your personal story, making it feel like it belongs to you alone. Many humans live almost their entire lives possessed by such a mind, mistaking the mind's patterns for their own identity, without ever recognizing this is happening. If they did recognize it, freedom would begin. But the mind itself resists this recognition—it feels threatened by the suggestion that it is not the self. And so most people cannot hear this teaching, not because they refuse it, but because the mind prevents them from even perceiving it as possibility.

How Collective Thought Forms Take Over Societies

The power of collective thought forms is visible at a societal level. During Soviet communism in Russia or Maoism in China, entire populations thought the same thoughts, felt the same justifications, and acted from the same ideological frameworks. Millions of people possessed by a single thought form. In modern societies, the mechanism is more diffuse—there is no single monolithic thought form—but different thought patterns are perpetuated through media and culture. These patterns become our most basic assumptions about how to interpret the world, often so foundational that we do not recognize them as thought patterns at all. They are simply how things are.

The forms that consciousness takes in the mind are neutral in themselves. The problem arises when thought becomes all there is—when there is no awareness separate from thinking. In this state, thought becomes destructive and insane, operating without any observing presence to interrupt its patterns.

Your Awareness Is Not Personal—It Helps Humanity

Here is what changes everything: when you cultivate awareness in your own mind, you are not only helping yourself. Whatever awareness arises in you is not limited to your benefit—it has an impact on the totality of the collective mind. When awareness awakens in you, awareness is awakening in the collective consciousness of humanity. This is not mystical language but a direct statement of how consciousness functions. Your personal transformation is simultaneously a contribution to collective transformation.

In the same way that your thoughts are not truly personal but drawn from the collective, your awakening is not purely personal. The energy of your awareness ripples outward. This is why the cultivation of presence and observation is not a selfish pursuit but a service to the whole.

How Awareness Reveals Your True Power

The fundamental illusion is identification with thinking. When you are identified with thought, you are run by patterns—karmic patterns, collective patterns, mental patterns—largely outside your conscious control. You mistake the mind's voice for your own voice, its desires for your own desires, its fears for your own fears. In this state, you are virtually absent, asleep, absent from true power.

Your actual power emerges as you wake up from this identification. The tool is not to war against thoughts or emotions, but to recognize where you are allowing yourself to identify with something you are not. Each time you notice "I am having this thought" rather than "I am this thought," you create a gap. In that gap is awareness. And awareness, the conscious presence that observes thinking, is ultimately powerless against consciousness itself—meaning consciousness cannot be controlled or manipulated by thinking. Thinking becomes a tool you use, not a force that possesses you.

Where to Go From Here

The invitation is to observe your own mind without claiming ownership of every thought and emotion that passes through it. Notice when fear, jealousy, or anger arises—is this truly your personal creation, or a universal human pattern that has found resonance in you? Notice the stories the mind attaches to these emotions. Can you feel the emotion without the story? Can you be aware of the thought without becoming the thought?

This practice is not about suppression or purification. It is about waking up to what is already true: you are not your thoughts; you are the awareness in which thoughts appear. That awareness is your actual nature, and it is the same awareness present in all beings. By recognizing this in yourself, you are recognizing it in the collective, and that recognition itself is a force for awakening.

[0:10] I love

[0:13] you. Um, so in talking about

[0:20] thinking I know this has an obvious

[0:23] answer and I'm actually asking beyond

[0:25] this, but where do our thoughts come

[0:28] from? You know, so often times

[0:31] I'll I'll have thoughts and I I

[0:34] recognize them as even not my own or or

[0:37] possibly patterns that have existed for

[0:39] years and years. You know, jealousy

[0:41] thoughts or competitive thoughts or the

[0:43] thoughts of being

[0:45] threatened and

[0:48] fear. But truthfully, is this something

[0:51] is waking us up in the middle of the

[0:52] night that you were just talking

[0:56] about? What is that? Is is it a is it

[1:00] just part of the condition of being

[1:01] alive?

[1:04] Thank

[1:04] [Music]

[1:08] you. The Buddha was asked a similar

[1:11] question. Uh I'll tell you what he said,

[1:14] but then I'll I'll I will answer it

[1:16] because he didn't.

[1:20] Thank you.

[1:27] Uh somebody asked him a question like

[1:29] that and he he gave a parable. He said

[1:31] uh you've got somebody shot you with an

[1:34] arrow. You've got an arrow stuck in your

[1:37] body and before you remove it, you're

[1:40] trying to find out where did that arrow

[1:43] come from. Before I remove it, I need to

[1:45] know who shot it and why and where it

[1:47] came from. Let's examine this in more

[1:50] detail.

[1:52] Um and that was his answer. What he was

[1:57] saying was our main concern should be to

[2:00] remove the arrow instead of trying to

[2:04] find out where it all started. How did

[2:07] it all start? Where did it all

[2:09] originate? That was his his teaching was

[2:12] very practical, totally practical.

[2:16] Not all of Buddhism is that practical

[2:18] anymore. Some of it still remains

[2:20] practical compared to other traditions.

[2:23] But in the the very beginning of the

[2:25] Buddhist teaching was just totally

[2:27] practical. Remove the arrow. The arrow

[2:30] of course stands for suffering. Any form

[2:32] of suffering that is

[2:34] self-generated through the

[2:38] mind and okay so that was his answer.

[2:43] Now, of course, I agree with that and

[2:47] I'm sure we all do. Thought going a

[2:52] little bit beyond it. Thought

[2:54] is there's a there's such a thing as a

[2:57] collective

[2:59] mind. And

[3:00] so many thoughts are not your thoughts

[3:04] really. They arise in the collective

[3:07] mind. They are energy fields or

[3:09] energetic

[3:11] entities that one could almost think of

[3:14] them as little bubbles floating around.

[3:17] It may not be literally true. I haven't

[3:19] actually seen any bubbles,

[3:21] but little bubbles, thought forms

[3:24] floating around. And if if the thought

[3:27] form discovers any resonance with

[3:29] anything inside you, for

[3:32] example, any form of

[3:36] negativity and then there's a thought

[3:38] form in the collective

[3:40] mind, an even heavier thought form of

[3:42] negativity for just a slight irritation

[3:45] about what somebody said today.

[3:48] Why? And then there's another thought

[3:50] form that vi that resonates with that

[3:52] negativity and then that little that

[3:55] bubble

[3:59] comes and before you know it the

[4:01] irritation has become something

[4:04] bigger. So you you connect you with the

[4:08] universal mind and it moves through you.

[4:12] So when we deal with our so-called our

[4:16] own minds with is far more than our own

[4:19] minds and whatever awareness arises in

[4:22] you is not just your

[4:25] benefit. It has an impact on the

[4:28] totality of the collective mind. When

[4:31] awareness arises in you, it means

[4:34] awareness is arising in the collective

[4:37] mind of humanity.

[4:39] So it's not just it's not just a

[4:41] personal thing in the same way that any

[4:45] thinking that takes possession of your

[4:48] mind is not really personal. There is no

[4:52] personal thought as such. It pretends to

[4:54] be personal. It's a human collective

[4:58] mind. In the same way, of course, any

[5:00] emotion generated by that is not it's it

[5:04] looks like my emotion, but it's either

[5:07] it's it's anger or it's sadness or it's

[5:10] jealousy or it's whatever this and

[5:12] that's basically it's the same in

[5:14] everybody when it arises. It attaches

[5:17] itself to slightly different stories in

[5:19] the mind of why I'm angry. But the anger

[5:22] is anger, human anger.

[5:26] So

[5:28] again, it's not it's not it's not yours.

[5:33] It's you pick it up and then it gets

[5:35] hold of you. And then many humans live

[5:39] virtually with a mind that has taken

[5:42] possession of them, pretends to be

[5:45] them, and they're stuck with it without

[5:49] even knowing it. If they knew it, there

[5:51] would be the beginning of freedom. They

[5:54] don't know it. And if you tell them they

[5:56] are, they get angry. But they don't the

[5:58] mind does because it feels

[6:00] threatened. So they're still humans who

[6:03] you who won't hear this. They can't hear

[6:05] this because immediately they would feel

[6:07] threatened by it because they're in

[6:09] total totally possessed by the mind.

[6:13] Um you can see how for example certain

[6:17] collective thought forms can take

[6:20] possession of an entire

[6:23] country such as happened for example

[6:25] during communism Soviet communism in

[6:29] Russia Mauism in China millions of

[6:33] people all thinking the same

[6:36] thing and the but even in our society

[6:42] It's it's not not not necessarily one

[6:46] monolithic thought form as such as that

[6:50] but different there are different

[6:52] thought forms through the media become

[6:55] perpetuated and without knowing it often

[6:58] they are our most basic assumptions how

[7:01] we interpret the universe and the world

[7:03] around us our basic assumption are

[7:06] thought forms that come out of the

[7:08] collective have taken possession of us

[7:10] and They're all forms that consciousness

[7:13] takes in the mind and that's all fine in

[7:19] itself. It's fine if there is an

[7:22] awareness. But if thought is all there

[7:25] is, it becomes destructive and

[7:28] insane. Without awareness, of course,

[7:31] your next question if you want to carry

[7:33] that is why?

[7:37] [Music]

[7:39] How did it all start?

[7:42] Where does it come from? And that's the

[7:44] arrow again, right? Yeah. In fact, uh my

[7:48] friend Jen and I use the phrase when you

[7:51] ask why that is the lie. Yeah. You know,

[7:54] just the need Yes. to let it go. But the

[7:57] thing that occurred when you shared your

[7:59] answer, thank you.

[8:01] um is that the thinking isn't something

[8:03] I need to war against, but rather it's a

[8:05] tool and it's showing me where I'm

[8:07] allowing myself to identify with

[8:09] something that I'm not and thus identify

[8:11] with being separate. Yes. From this one.

[8:13] So yes, it's a wonderful tool. Yes.

[8:17] That is ultimately powerless in the face

[8:20] of consciousness. Is that correct? Yes.

[8:22] If you identified with

[8:25] thinking, you say

[8:27] powerless. Yes.

[8:29] Because you are not there. You're

[8:32] absent, virtually absent or completely

[8:34] asleep when you identified with

[8:36] thinking. So you are being run by

[8:40] patterns on the colle karmic collective

[8:43] patterns, mental patterns, right? And so

[8:46] your true power comes as you wake up out

[8:49] of that.

[8:54] Thanks Ekar. Thank you.

Frequently Asked Questions

According to this teaching, many thoughts arise from a collective human consciousness rather than your individual mind. Thoughts behave like energetic entities or 'bubbles' floating in a shared mental field. When one of these thought forms resonates with negativity or patterns within you, it amplifies and moves through your awareness. Your personal story gets attached to universal human patterns, making them feel personally owned.
No—anger, fear, sadness, and jealousy are universal human emotions, identical in every person. The mind attaches different personal stories to these universal feelings, which makes them seem unique to you. The raw emotion itself (anger being anger in all humans) is a collective pattern, not a personal creation.
The key is recognizing that you are not your thoughts—you are the awareness observing them. When you notice 'I am having this thought' rather than identifying as the thought itself, you create space and freedom. This awareness itself is your true power, and it cannot be controlled by thinking.
When awareness arises in you, it simultaneously arises in the collective consciousness of humanity. Your personal awakening and cultivation of presence is not selfish—it directly impacts the totality of collective consciousness and contributes to humanity's awakening.
Yes. History shows periods when entire nations became possessed by a single ideological thought form (Soviet communism, Maoism). Even in modern society, different thought patterns perpetuated through media become our most basic assumptions about reality, often without us recognizing them as thought patterns at all.
The Buddha taught that rather than spending energy investigating where suffering and thoughts originate, focus first on removing the suffering itself. The 'arrow' represents self-generated suffering caused by the mind. The practical teaching is to deal with present suffering before getting lost in its genealogy.
