How Grudges Feed the Egoand Block Spiritual Growth

Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle teaches that grievances—the mental habit of dwelling on past wrongs and injustices—are not neutral emotional states but active mechanisms that feed the ego's sense of identity and separateness. By holding onto grudges, we reinforce a false self that depends on resentment to feel real and significant. Releasing grievances is not about excusing wrongdoing; it is about withdrawing energy from the ego so consciousness can awaken to the present moment.

What Are Grievances and How Do They Feed the Ego?

A grievance is the mental habit of replaying a past wrong, real or perceived, and using it to define a narrative about who wronged us and who we are in relation to that wrong. Tolle's core insight is that grievances are not incidental emotional reactions—they actively nourish the ego. The ego is not a solid thing but a psychological structure built on identification with thought and story. When we hold a grudge, we give the ego substance and continuity.

The mechanism works like this: each time we recall and mentally rehearse a grievance, we reinforce the story that "I am the one who was wronged" or "I am the victim of this person's actions." This story becomes part of our identity. The ego feeds on it because it provides a sense of solidity and significance. Without the grievance, the ego would have one less anchor to cling to. In this sense, grudges are a form of unconscious self-perpetuation—we keep them alive because they keep us feeling like a separate, defined self.

Why Do We Cling to Grudges If They Harm Us?

It may seem irrational to hold onto something that causes suffering, yet people do so almost universally. Tolle's explanation points to a subtle psychological truth: the ego prefers suffering with identity to peace without a clear sense of self. A grievance gives the mind something to chew on, a narrative that provides structure and meaning, even if that meaning is rooted in pain.

When we release a grievance, we face a temporary void. The story that defined us—the injustice we suffered, the reasons we were right to feel hurt—falls away. The ego interprets this void as a kind of non-existence or insignificance. So rather than step into that spaciousness, the mind will unconsciously resurrect the grievance. We replay it, add new details, imagine what we should have said, rehearse how we would respond if we saw the person again. Each rehearsal is a way of saying: "I still exist, I still matter, because this wrong was done to me."

How Do Grievances Obstruct Spiritual Awakening?

Spiritual awakening, in Tolle's teaching, is the shift from identification with the thinking mind to awareness of present-moment consciousness. It is a movement from the narrow, reactive self to a larger, more inclusive awareness. Grievances are structural obstacles to this shift because they lock consciousness into the past and into the mind's story-making function.

When attention is bound up in a grievance, it cannot rest in the now. The now is the only place where true consciousness is available. The past, by contrast, exists only as thought and memory in the present moment. By dwelling on a past wrong, we create a thick layer of mental narrative that screens out direct, immediate awareness. We become trapped in the story rather than free in the present.

Furthermore, grievances strengthen identification with the personal self—the "I" that was wronged. Awakening, by contrast, involves loosening identification with the personal identity and recognizing a deeper, impersonal consciousness. Each time we reinforce a grievance, we tighten the knot of ego-identification. Each time we release one, we loosen it slightly and make space for awareness to emerge.

What Is the Difference Between Grievance and Legitimate Boundary-Setting?

An important clarification: releasing grievances does not mean tolerating harmful behavior or abandoning the capacity to set boundaries. A boundary is a present-moment decision about what you will or will not accept in your interactions. It can be stated clearly and enforced calmly. A grievance, by contrast, is an ongoing mental and emotional fixation on past harm, usually accompanied by resentment, a sense of victimhood, or a desire for the other person to suffer or be punished.

You can remove yourself from a harmful relationship, refuse to engage with someone, or report abuse to authorities—all without holding a grievance. In fact, when a boundary is set from presence and clarity rather than from the ego's need to punish or be vindicated, it tends to be more effective and more stable. The person who sets a boundary without a grudge often communicates it with more power and less reactivity than the person who is still feeding a grievance.

How Can Someone Begin to Release Grievances?

Tolle's approach does not rely on forced forgiveness or suppression of anger. Instead, it begins with awareness. The first step is to notice when you are holding a grievance—to catch the mind in the act of replaying a story about a past wrong and using it to generate a sense of hurt identity. This noticing itself creates a gap between your awareness and the thought pattern. You are no longer completely identified with the grievance; you are observing it.

The second step is to recognize that the grievance is a choice, even if an unconscious one. You are choosing to give energy to a story that keeps you trapped in the past. This recognition does not require self-blame—most people are not consciously aware that grievances serve the ego. But once you see the mechanism, you can begin to make a different choice.

The third step is to withdraw attention from the grievance. This does not happen through willpower or forced forgetting; it happens by turning attention toward the present moment. Feel your body. Notice sounds. Observe your breath. Bring awareness to what is happening now, rather than what happened then. When the grievance-thought arises again—and it will, repeatedly—gently bring attention back to presence. Each time you do this, you weaken the grievance's grip and strengthen your capacity to rest in awareness.

What Happens When Grievances Are Released?

As grievances dissolve, several things shift. First, energy that was locked into the past becomes available in the present. This often manifests as a sense of lightness, increased vitality, or clearer thinking. The mental clutter that was occupied by the grudge-story clears.

Second, the sense of separation from the person or group you held a grievance against softens. Not because you suddenly believe they were right or that the harm didn't happen, but because you are no longer using their wrongdoing as the foundation of your identity. This can lead to genuine forgiveness, though forgiveness is not the goal—freedom is.

Third, there is often a deepening of presence and consciousness. With less mental energy devoted to justifying grievances and defending a wounded identity, awareness naturally settles into the now. This is where spiritual awakening happens.

Where to Go From Here

Begin by practicing the simple observation of grievances in your own mind. Over the next week, notice how many times you replay a story about being wronged—by a person, an institution, or life itself. Don't judge yourself for holding these grievances; simply observe them with curiosity. This awareness is the first and most important step.

Then, experiment with withdrawing attention from the grievance-story and anchoring it in the present moment. When you catch yourself in a grievance, pause and feel your hands, listen to sounds in your environment, or notice your breath for just 30 seconds. Notice what shifts. Over time, this practice will weaken the gravitational pull of old resentments and free consciousness to awaken to what is actually happening now.

Questions fréquemment posées

According to Tolle, the ego uses grievances to maintain a sense of identity and significance. Without the story of being wronged, the ego faces a void it interprets as non-existence. Holding a grudge gives the mind continuity and structure, so people unconsciously preserve grievances to feel real and defined, even at the cost of suffering.
No. Releasing a grievance means stopping the habit of dwelling on a past wrong and using it to define your identity. Forgiveness may follow, but the primary purpose of releasing grievances is to free consciousness from the past and return it to presence. You can establish boundaries without holding a grudge.
Grievances lock consciousness into the past and into the mind's story-making function. Awakening happens in the present moment, where the ego's identification is loosened. By dwelling on past wrongs, you strengthen identification with the personal self and create a thick layer of mental narrative that screens out direct awareness.
Yes. A boundary is a clear, present-moment decision about what you will or will not accept. It can be stated and enforced calmly and directly. A grievance, by contrast, is an ongoing mental fixation on past harm mixed with resentment or a desire for punishment. Boundaries without grievances are often more effective and more powerfully communicated.
The first step is to notice when you are holding a grievance—to catch the mind replaying a story about a past wrong. This noticing alone creates a gap between your awareness and the thought pattern. You then practice withdrawing attention from the grievance-story and anchoring it in the present moment through breath, body sensation, or immediate surroundings.
Energy locked into the past becomes available in the present, often felt as lightness and increased vitality. The sense of separation from those you held grievances against softens. And with less mental energy devoted to protecting a wounded identity, awareness naturally settles into the now, where genuine spiritual awakening can occur.
