Description

Sleep Alchemy is a five-day spiritual workshop on Daoist sleep practices at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. It is led by Simon Cox and Jeffrey S. Reid, who teach the Wudang Hibernating Dragon and Five Dragons Sleeping methods from the Sanfeng lineage. It suits anyone curious about sleep as a contemplative discipline rather than a nightly collapse, and about the Wudang Daoist tradition more broadly.

What to Expect

The workshop treats sleep as a practice of subtle awareness. You learn introductory Wudang sleeping methods to enter, sustain, and deepen sleep states, and you work with them directly during the sessions. Sleeping in class is encouraged. The teachers say snoring will be punished with five hundred years in Daoist hell, which gives a fair sense of the tone: relaxed, since the Dao is at ease.

Alongside the practice, the group explores classical Daoist stories, including Zhuangzi's Butterfly Dream and Lü Dongbin's Yellow Millet Dream, which probe how thin the line between reality and illusion can be. There is also practical conversation within a Daoist framework about how food, lifestyle, and daily habits affect the quality of your rest. The aim is that you leave familiar with techniques to deepen sleep, support well-being, and meet the dream of life more lucidly.

The week begins on Monday with check-in after 2pm, room keys at 4pm, and an orientation called How to Drop into Esalen in the late afternoon. The workshop opens that evening, from 7:15 to 9:30pm. Tuesday through Thursday follow a steady rhythm: morning instruction from 9:30am to 12:30pm, then an afternoon session from 4:00pm until about 6:00 or 6:15pm. The afternoons move through Wudang methods, dreams and reality, and lifestyle integration. The final session runs Friday from 9:30am to noon, with lunch available until 2pm before you depart or stay on campus.
