Deepest Truth of Human Existence:Beyond Thought and Words

The deepest truth of human existence cannot be grasped through words or intellectual understanding alone. It emerges when you shift awareness from the continuous stream of mental noise to the underlying field of stillness that exists beneath all thought. This inner silence is not separate from you—it is accessed through the act of listening itself, without seeking anything specific. The moment you pay attention to this dimension of silence, you transcend the ego-mind that most people mistakenly identify as their self, revealing a realm of presence that connects you to the deepest dimensions of existence.

How Is the Deepest Truth of Human Existence Accessed?

The deepest truth is not something to understand intellectually—it is something to experience. According to the teaching, there are "two levels" to this exploration: the words themselves and the gaps between the words. Most listeners unconsciously focus only on absorbing the information content of what is said. But the more potent instruction lies in the underlying dimension of stillness from which the words emerge. This is why the talk functions as a meditation rather than a lecture.

When you listen, you are invited to become aware of an "underlying field of stillness...both within and without." This field is not personal to you; it is a universal dimension of existence. As you sit with awareness of this silence, you are simultaneously accessing something within yourself that is deeper than thought. The paradox is that you cannot think your way into silence—thought is noise by definition. The only way to notice the stillness is through a faculty that is not the thinking mind. That faculty is the capacity to listen, to be present, to acknowledge.

What Is the Realm of Stillness Underneath Mental Noise?

For most people, consciousness is almost entirely identified with the "continuous stream of mental noise"—the ceaseless chatter of thinking that feels like the self. This stream of thought is what people call their identity or their mind. But beneath this noise, there exists a dimension of silence and stillness that can be directly experienced once attention is withdrawn from the mental stream and redirected inward.

The moment you pay attention to silence—not to silence as a concept, but to the actual experience of quiet awareness—a shift occurs. Stillness arises in you. This is not something you create; it is something you recognize and allow. The paradox Tolle points to is that "through thought you cannot pay attention to silence because thought is noise." Attempting to think about silence defeats the purpose. Instead, what is required is a quality of awareness or presence that is distinct from the thinking process itself.

This realm is described as existing "underneath the stream of mental noise," suggesting it is the ground or foundation from which all thought emerges. It is always present, but ordinarily obscured by the mind's constant activity. The teaching suggests that even as you follow the words of a talk or teaching, the deeper truth is already emerging in you through the very act of listening—if that listening includes an awareness of the stillness that underlies the words.

How Do Words and Silence Relate to Each Other?

The talk explicitly draws attention to "the gaps between the words" and describes this gap as "a silent space in between and underlying the words." This is not merely poetic language; it is pointing to a functional reality. When words are spoken, they arise out of silence and return to silence. There is always a gap between one word and the next, no matter how small. This gap is not empty; it is full of presence.

When you listen with awareness of these gaps, listening becomes a meditation rather than mere information transfer. The deeper teaching does not lie "in and through the words" but "in the dimension of stillness." The words can point toward understanding; the silence is the understanding itself. This is why the speaker emphasizes that "there isn't that much information here"—the talk is not designed primarily to convey facts or concepts, but to create the conditions for direct experience of presence.

By becoming aware of the stillness underlying and between the words, you are simultaneously shifting your awareness from the content level (what is being said) to the presence level (the awareness in which the saying occurs). This shift is the gateway to experiencing the deepest truth.

What Does It Mean That Knowing Yourself and Knowing God Become One?

The teaching points to "levels so deep that knowing yourself and knowing God become one into the same." This is not a metaphorical or poetic statement; it reflects an understanding of non-dual consciousness. When you know yourself at the deepest level—not the personality, not the thinking mind, but the silent awareness underlying all experience—you discover something that is not separate from or other than what has been called God, ultimate reality, or being itself.

Most people know themselves only as the surface level of personality and thought. But as awareness moves deeper, beyond the stream of mental content, it touches a dimension of existence that is universal, not personal. This dimension is not "yours" in the sense of being separate or individual. It is the consciousness or presence in which all existence arises. To know this directly is to understand that what you fundamentally are is not isolated from the deepest reality—you are a localized expression of it.

How Does Attention to Silence Transform Your Sense of Self?

The talk emphasizes a crucial point: "simply by paying attention to silence through the inner stillness, that is the only way you can notice the stillness in you." The act of noticing the stillness is itself the recognition that something in you is not part of the mental noise. There is a capacity to witness, to be aware, to acknowledge—and this capacity is prior to and deeper than thought.

When you acknowledge this dimension of stillness, "you have accessed a realm within yourself that is deeper" than the stream of mind. Most people never directly experience this because they remain identified with the mind's continuous activity. They are lost in thought and mistake this mental activity for who they are. By shifting attention to silence, you are not creating a new realm; you are redirecting awareness to something that has always been present but overlooked.

The transformation that occurs is not in acquiring something new but in the fundamental shift of identity: from being identified with thought to being identified with the awareness in which thought arises. In that shift, "you have gone beyond the continuous stream of mental noise that for most people is who they think they are." This going beyond is not transcendence in the sense of escaping or rejecting the mind—it is seeing through the illusion that the mind is the totality of who you are.

Why Is This Teaching Called a Meditation Rather Than a Lecture?

The teaching explicitly instructs listeners to "look upon it as a meditation although somebody is speaking." This invitation is practical, not merely philosophical. A lecture aims to inform the intellect; a meditation aims to shift consciousness. By approaching the words as a meditation, you are not passively absorbing information but actively engaging in a practice of presence.

In meditation, the focus is on direct experience rather than conceptual understanding. By listening with awareness of the stillness beneath the words, you are participating in the very realization being pointed to. You are not learning about presence—you are accessing presence through the act of listening itself. The words serve as a gateway, not as the destination. This is why the speaker says the talk is "not an information based talk"—it is designed to create the conditions for you to experience directly the truth being discussed rather than merely understanding it mentally.

Where to Go From Here

If you resonate with this teaching on the deepest truth and the power of stillness, the next step is consistent practice. Begin to notice the gaps in your own thinking—the pauses between thoughts that naturally arise. In those gaps, there is silence and presence. Learn to rest your awareness there, even briefly. This is not difficult; it requires only that you redirect attention from the content of thought to the silence underlying it.

Pay attention to deep listening in your daily life, not just during meditation. When you truly listen to another person or to the world around you, you are naturally drawn into presence. Notice how this quality of listening differs from the usual mental commentary that runs alongside perception. Explore what happens when you become aware of the stillness that is both within and without, the field of presence in which all experience occurs. The deepest truth is not distant or difficult to access—it is available in this very moment through the simple act of awareness.

[0:20] you

[0:25] I would like to

[0:29] nor with you

[0:36] this afternoon

[0:43] the deepest truth of human existence

[0:56] when I say that let me sound a little

[1:01] bit abstract interesting but abstract

[1:08] human existence and it may sound a

[1:15] little bit philosophical but this is not

[1:22] a lecture on philosophy nor is it a

[1:29] lecture at all the best way to look upon

[1:37] it is as a meditation

[1:40] although somebody is speaking look upon

[1:45] it as a meditation so when I say the

[1:50] deepest truth of human existence it

[1:54] sounds a little bit removed from your

[1:58] everyday concerns so let's put it in

[2:03] another way we are here to explore the

[2:11] deepest truth of who you are because you

[2:19] are human existence

[2:24] we are here to explore the deepest truth

[2:30] within yourself

[2:37] knowing yourself at the deepest level

[2:45] the levels so deep that knowing yourself

[2:52] and knowing God become one into the same

[3:08] there are two levels to this talk if it

[3:14] can be called that one is the words

[3:26] and one is the gaps between the words a

[3:33] certain stillness I've just point this

[3:40] out because it is helpful as you listen

[3:46] to be aware not only of the words but of

[3:56] an underlying field of stillness out of

[4:02] which the words come nothing personal

[4:07] there's a field of stillness that is

[4:09] both within and without gaps between the

[4:14] words a silent space in between and

[4:21] underlying the words and simply to be

[4:29] aware also of that dimension then

[4:34] listening to these words is more than

[4:38] absorbing information because there

[4:40] isn't that much information here it's

[4:42] not an information based talk then it

[4:48] becomes a meditation to just sit here

[4:52] and listen and the deeper teaching if it

[4:56] can even be called teaching is not it in

[5:01] and through the words the deeper

[5:04] teaching lies in the dimension of

[5:08] stillness because the moment you

[5:14] acknowledge that underlying dimension

[5:21] you have accessed a ROM within yourself

[5:28] that is deeper in the stream of mind

[5:35] with which most people are identified as

[5:41] themselves simply as we sit here to

[5:49] acknowledge to notice to listen to an

[5:56] underlying stillness that which

[6:01] acknowledges that in you that which is

[6:06] able to listen to that dimension listen

[6:11] not to something listen to nothing to

[6:14] nothing just the act of listening that

[6:17] in you which is able to acknowledge that

[6:24] dimension to be attentive to that I

[6:26] mention is a realm of stillness

[6:32] underneath the stream of mental noise in

[6:36] other words the moment you pay attention

[6:41] to that dimension of silence there is a

[6:46] stillness in you because through thought

[6:50] you cannot paid attention to silence

[6:54] because thought is noise so already

[6:59] although through words we are going to

[7:02] progressively explore the deepest truth

[7:06] of human existence even as you sit here

[7:09] and follow the words that progressively

[7:12] explore the deepest truths of human

[7:15] existence that deepest truth of human

[7:18] existence is already emerging in you as

[7:21] you sit here and listen even now simply

[7:27] by paying attention to silence through

[7:32] the inner stillness that is the only way

[7:35] you can notice the stillness in you

[7:38] notices that and you have gone beyond

[7:46] the continuous stream of mental noise

[7:50] that for most people is who they think

[7:53] they are

By shifting awareness from the mental stream to the underlying stillness. Pay attention to the silence beneath and between thoughts, not through thinking but through a quality of presence and listening. This direct experience of inner stillness is the deepest truth itself.
Thought is noise by definition, and you cannot pay attention to silence through noise. The capacity to recognize stillness requires a faculty of awareness that is distinct from the thinking mind—pure presence or witnessing consciousness.
The gaps are the silent spaces between spoken words, full of presence and stillness. By becoming aware of these gaps while listening, you access the deeper dimension from which the words arise, making listening a meditation rather than mere information absorption.
At the deepest level of consciousness, individual awareness connects with universal presence. The distinction between knowing yourself and knowing ultimate reality dissolves because you discover that what you fundamentally are is not separate from the deepest dimension of existence.
The field of stillness is universal—both within and without. While you experience it individually, it is not personal or separate. It is a shared dimension of consciousness underlying all existence, not something that belongs only to you.
Meditation is direct experience through presence; thinking about teachings remains at the conceptual level. By listening as a meditation rather than absorbing information, you are simultaneously experiencing the very reality being pointed to.
