Four Cycles Qigong: Healing EnergyPractice from Shaolin Tradition

Robert Peng
Robert Peng

9 min di lettura

Robert Peng teaches the four cycles qigong practice, an ancient Shaolin Temple technique that combines breathing, hand postures, body movements, and visualization to collect and circulate healing energy (chi) through the meridians. The four cycles address specific emotional and physical imbalances: the first cycle draws earth and heaven chi to nourish the body; the second releases stored emotional patterns through spinal rotation; the third opens the chest and heart center to reduce heat and agitation; and the fourth completes the circulation. The practice integrates foundations like microcosmic orbit breathing and the labor palace hand posture, and culminates in projecting protective and healing qi outward to the environment and universe.

What Are the Four Cycles and Their Shaolin Origins?

The four cycles (also written as si zhoutian in pinyin) originate from the Shaolin Temple tradition, one of the 72 special skills taught to monks for both martial arts and healing. According to Peng, the practice was documented in a text published around 1934 that formalized these methods. Unlike the complex martial techniques Shaolin is famous for—such as striking with a weapon against the throat or other combat skills—the four cycles distill the essence of Shaolin energy work into a deceptively simple framework.

Peng emphasizes that the four cycles exemplify a principle central to Chinese wisdom: simple movement, deep meaning (in Chinese, jian yong, shen yi). The method requires only four basic movements, yet the internal significance and energetic effects run profound. All 72 Shaolin skills are said to rest on foundational practices like the microcosmic orbit (agentic gene) and these four cycles, making them essential for anyone seeking to understand Shaolin-derived qigong.

How Does the First Cycle Draw Heaven and Earth Energy?

The first cycle is called "Tuo Di Tuo Tian," which translates as "pull the earth, support the sky." Peng describes this as mixing heaven chi and earth chi, using a simple hand posture and vertical arm movement combined with breath.

The hand gesture begins with the middle finger bent and the other fingers relaxed but open. The key energy point is called the labor palace (laogong), located in the center of the palm. This point serves as both a receiver and holder of chi, functioning like a bubble that collects universal energy. When you raise your hands, palms up and facing the sky, you are literally pulling energy downward from heaven; when you press down with palms open, you are gathering energy from the earth.

The practice unfolds as follows: Inhale while raising your hands slowly in front of your body, palms facing upward, as if stretching a rubber band between your hands and the earth. Look upward as your hands rise. Exhale as you turn your palms to face outward and move them horizontally to the sides, keeping your eyes on your hands. Inhale again as you bring your hands back to center and look straight ahead, then exhale as you lower your hands down the front of your body.

As you lower, visualize drawing chi from your lower abdomen—the region called the lower dantien, which Peng describes as "a ball of chi." You then imagine sending this chi outward to the horizon, where it blends with earth chi. Simultaneously, you are drawing heaven chi from above. The three energies—your own chi, earth chi, and heaven chi—merge together. Peng instructs you to "switch on a light" in your head, heart, and lower torso, nourishing them with this unified energy. This cycle embodies the principle of balancing yin and yang, drawing on both terrestrial and celestial sources of vitality.

What Does the Second Cycle Address Emotionally?

The second cycle is called "Lao She Sang Huo Liao," which means "five fatigues, seven injuries." In traditional Chinese medicine and qigong terminology, this refers to accumulated emotional and physical problems: worries, the five emotions (anger, anxiety, emotional imbalance, sadness, fear), frustrations, and other ailments. Peng teaches this cycle as a method to release these stored patterns.

The movement is a spinal rotation with an inward-focused hand position. You keep your hands held together at your lower torso (the lower dantien region), maintaining gentle contact with your body rather than letting your hands fall flat. Inhale while rotating your head to the right, holding your breath as you gaze over your shoulder toward your back, trying to see your heels if possible. Exhale as you return to center. Repeat on the left side, alternating for several rounds.

The energetic mechanism is crucial: as you rotate and look back, your entire spine lengthens and contracts in a pumping motion, which Peng says "screens and pumps chi" to your brain and throughout your body. Simultaneously, as you visualize looking at your heels, you are contemplating a point in your body known as ming men, described as a "snowy mountain." When sunlight melts snow, it flows downward; similarly, as your attention "melts" the energy at ming men, this chi flows down to your two kidneys, which Peng compares to two reservoirs. In five-element theory, the kidneys govern the water element, and this cycle directly tonifies kidney energy while clearing emotional stagnation.

How Does the Third Cycle Open the Heart Center?

The third cycle is called "Zhui Yue Jian Chuang," meaning "chase the moon, open the window." Peng frames this poetically: imagine yourself in an autumn night in the mountains, gazing at the moon. The practice is designed to address what Peng calls yin huo (deficient heat) and emotional imbalance—anxiety, frustration, and agitation. "Reduce the fire," he says, implying that excessive heat and emotional turbulence cloud clarity and peace.

The stance shifts to a wider, horse-riding posture (ma bu), with feet about one-and-a-half shoulder-widths apart. You raise your arms with palms facing downward, then place your hands on your waist as you settle into the horse stance. From here, you make a wide circular motion: imagine drawing a large circle at chest height, one hand pushing outward while the other pulls back, creating an opening-and-closing action. The hand gesture during the pushing phase involves a specific pressure on energetic points.

As you push and turn through the circle, you are opening the chest cavity, the window of the heart center. This expansive movement, combined with the downward palm direction, helps dissipate excessive heat and agitation stored in the upper body. The practice literally and energetically "opens the window" so that stagnant emotional energy can escape, leaving behind clarity and calm.

What is the Purpose of the Fourth Cycle?

While the transcript excerpt does not fully detail the fourth cycle's instructions, Peng indicates that it completes the energy circulation. The four cycles together form a comprehensive system: the first draws and mixes universal and personal chi; the second pumps this energy through the spine and tonifies the kidneys; the third opens the heart and releases excess heat; and the fourth seals and completes the microcosmic orbit, returning energy to the lower dantien for storage and regeneration.

What Role Does Visualization and Intent Play?

Throughout all four cycles, Peng stresses that visualization and conscious intent are not optional—they are the engine of the practice. You are not simply moving your body; you are directing chi with your attention. When you visualize pulling a rubber band between your hands and the earth, you are using your mind to create an energetic circuit. When you imagine melting snow at ming men, you are activating a specific energetic pathway. When you contemplate the moon and open a window in your chest, you are using the mind's eye to reconfigure emotional and thermal patterns.

Peng explains that many people perform movements without understanding the internal work: they go through the motions but miss the chi cultivation. The four cycles demand that you engage both body and mind simultaneously. The breath anchors intention; the hand postures (mudras) direct energy; and the visualization crystallizes the whole system into a coherent energetic event.

How Does This Practice Relate to Illness and Imbalance?

Peng ties the four cycles to preventive and curative health. He mentions that in modern life, we accumulate stagnation—unresolved emotions, physical tension, and energetic blockages in the meridians. Over time, this congestion becomes the seed of illness. He notes that qi and blood can become stuck, creating areas of excess and deficiency. The four cycles, when practiced regularly, systematically move stuck energy, tonify depleted reserves, and restore balance to the organs and emotional body.

He also references the concept of subtle layers of protection and circulation: the meridians, the acupuncture points, and what he calls the "invisible clothes" or aura—layers of qi that surround and interpenetrate the physical body. When these layers are coherent and well-circulated, they form a protective boundary. When they are weak or scattered, the body becomes vulnerable to illness and external environmental stress.

What is the Broader Teaching Context?

Peng notes that this class is an introduction, a walkthrough. He indicates that more elaborate, comprehensive teachings—full-day workshops or multi-hour sessions—may be offered later to explore these cycles in greater depth. He also provides materials (email links, downloadable resources, recorded walkthroughs from his personal retreat) to support practitioners who wish to study further. His approach acknowledges that the four cycles are ancient, layered practices that cannot be exhaustively taught in a single session, yet the basic movements and principles can be grasped and applied immediately.

By grounding his teaching in the Shaolin lineage and the documented historical text from 1934, Peng positions the four cycles as both authentic and time-tested. This is not a modern invention but a distilled synthesis of centuries of monastic practice, now adapted for contemporary Western students who come from different cultural backgrounds and learning styles.

Where to go from here

If you are new to these practices, begin by learning the hand postures and basic movements of the first cycle in isolation. Practice the inhalation-exhalation pattern and the visualization of drawing earth and heaven chi for several days until the movement becomes natural. Once the first cycle feels integrated, add the second cycle's spinal rotation work, focusing on the sensation of the spine pumping and the kidneys tonifying. Gradually layer in the third cycle's heart-opening chest work. If you have access to Robert Peng's full materials, recorded walkthrough, or webinar links (available through his website or community emails), use those to refine your alignment and understanding. Consider joining his regular qigong classes online or in person to receive live guidance and correction. The four cycles are meant to be lived and embodied over time, not merely understood intellectually; consistent practice reveals depths that cannot be grasped from reading alone.

[22:34] yeah if you do 90 you still can do that

[22:38] means you do it too easily you can make

[22:41] you stand it lower yeah so try to minam

[22:45] making limited on the twenty yeah so if

[22:48] what do you do too easily you can just

[22:50] slow down punch yeah

[22:54] strengthen you lower than ten she okay

[22:59] so then you finish sorry you finish yeah

[23:05] you finish yeah punching coming back

[23:07] yeah

[23:08] exhale and inhale from the side exhale

[23:13] [Music]

[23:16] nourish you chew tell yourself I mean

[23:21] she she is in me okay take deep inhale

[23:32] ah

[23:36] inhale they sigh out like you have just

[23:41] had a beautiful meal inhale huh me on

[23:46] [Music]

[23:52] again inhale

[23:58] [Applause]

[24:19] you see in a last newsletter I mentioned

[24:24] yeah when I was with my master

[24:26] this little boy yeah sometimes I

[24:30] practice healing with him and yeah we

[24:35] asked to go to some people's home or you

[24:39] know sometimes go to the hospital yeah

[24:41] infectious area someplace yeah if we go

[24:44] there you always say well yeah then I do

[24:48] that yeah yeah so what is whoa cool yeah

[24:52] what does it mean yeah what what is it

[24:54] help

[24:55] what is help whoa ku is is a way to make

[25:00] your energy bubble or pretentious yeah

[25:03] if you are a practitioner I have a lot

[25:07] of students who are psychologists or

[25:11] psychoanalysis they are acupuncturist

[25:14] massage therapists you have to see

[25:16] people face to face right and sometimes

[25:20] you are you're not so strong will you

[25:23] press on their energy points or even

[25:26] people you're talking then you feel the

[25:28] energies are like sucked out some people

[25:31] are good at for having the chi or

[25:33] because you're weak yeah and or if you

[25:38] go to some place you go to some place

[25:40] it's quite contaminated yeah you cannot

[25:43] help that is a very good one

[25:46] how do you do that you hold your hands

[25:49] like this no thumbs inside yeah this is

[25:56] called walk oh this is what and fist

[25:59] this is whoa cool okay that's different

[26:02] so when you're doing this the whole

[26:09] system are in like a breathable clothes

[26:13] upstate so your Chi is not leaking out

[26:16] easily the the Chi outside is not easily

[26:20] made you into because you know the call

[26:23] it the meridian system this is long

[26:26] meridian okay long meridian start here

[26:30] then travel

[26:32] the way to here yeah so here solo Maria

[26:36] is also the first meeting when we were

[26:39] bound you know when you're born what is

[26:44] the first thing you do you cry right if

[26:47] you didn't cry at the moment you were

[26:51] born the doctors your parents are very

[26:53] worried yeah because they think you have

[26:56] some problems now you know the problem

[26:58] is that you after birth system it's not

[27:02] activated yeah before that before that

[27:05] you are in your mother's womb in the

[27:08] body you're connecting with the navel

[27:11] with with them with the mother of course

[27:13] all the skin - but mostly navel is the

[27:16] big cord to connect with the mother you

[27:19] get all the nutrients informations

[27:21] everything's the court but when you're

[27:23] born they have to be cut when that is

[27:26] cut you are independent you begin

[27:28] separate from your mother as an

[27:31] independent person you need to trigger

[27:34] or you're independent system starting

[27:36] with alone yeah so when you let out the

[27:40] first crack ah the long really start

[27:43] yeah then long large intestine stomach

[27:47] and spleen and hard small spleen or

[27:51] small intestine all this sequentially

[27:54] open up open up open up until

[27:57] gallbladder liver yeah in the day cycle

[28:02] every two hours you have one main stream

[28:04] on one of them at the end of the day

[28:06] about one o'clock you have finished in

[28:09] liver yeah then you started getting long

[28:12] buried in large intestine stomach is

[28:16] pulling all this yeah so when you are

[28:20] wrapping it like this yeah that means

[28:23] you begin to be like your mother's warm

[28:28] big loving protection big energy

[28:32] protection nourishing over there so that

[28:35] is very beautiful yeah so nowadays all

[28:41] the atmospheres you don't know yeah

[28:44] someplace that clean

[28:45] someone out what we are living with all

[28:47] different kind of things little things

[28:52] we're living together yeah

[28:53] some came he made into us you don't know

[28:56] some living with us they give us good

[28:58] probiotics right oh this so don't worry

[29:02] about this Nanak things as long as they

[29:05] are currently getting along with us yeah

[29:07] so this is sometimes we are not so sure

[29:11] hold it that is called whoa cool yeah

[29:14] and it's called mogul so whoa go is a

[29:17] good way to protect yourself actually it

[29:20] is not only good like in the physics

[29:23] world yeah emotionally - mentally - yeah

[29:29] so if you like in New York City where we

[29:33] go we know it's chaotic sometimes in the

[29:37] subways so you hold him or go then what

[29:42] will happen

[29:43] you look invisible energetically so you

[29:48] don't draw people citation who won't

[29:51] attack you all right hmm and even people

[29:56] wanted verbal little emotional attack

[29:59] you they feel they are very loose target

[30:02] yeah

[30:02] say for example if you got a job yeah

[30:08] you got a job then you did something

[30:10] wrong then you boss is very angry

[30:12] screaming at you right Oh what I gonna

[30:17] do oh you're his right well good hiding

[30:22] at the top pocket

[30:24] samaya edge boss yeah he may scream you

[30:28] for five minutes

[30:28] you know what's happening they will get

[30:31] exhausted in the end they will say okay

[30:33] robbery you go home you promote it all

[30:37] right wrap your hands in this position

[30:42] yeah okay remember that yeah well go

[30:50] this is called local mm Tommy oh gee oh

[30:54] yeah

[30:57] that's one thing I want to introduce

[30:59] energetically how to protect yourself

[31:01] another thing another thing is actually

[31:07] we can do some practice to make our

[31:09] energies more connected with our

[31:13] property with a country or city our

[31:21] country and a planet yeah in a planet if

[31:29] we are disconnected from our

[31:32] surroundings from our environment that

[31:35] is time we become to get ill or sick or

[31:39] vulnerable yeah horrible so we want to

[31:42] make yourself connected the many ways to

[31:45] us connected you know Feng Shui they pay

[31:47] us as they out but you can make Fung

[31:50] Shui energetically inside of itself yeah

[31:52] we have three ten taels Albert and ten

[31:55] Middleton TN Lord Antony lower torso a

[31:58] three energy center the central meridian

[32:02] is another big interesting to connect

[32:05] with the Hemant University yeah that's

[32:07] the big structure but meanwhile we have

[32:10] a few sectors horizontally connecting

[32:14] with you yeah with you with your

[32:19] surroundings like table head third eye

[32:22] throat chest solar plexus your lower Dan

[32:28] Tien your lower torso yeah perineum we

[32:31] call the Huyen knees and feet whoa let

[32:37] me see I have a have a screen here let

[32:40] me show you all right so these are the

[32:50] sections that we want to push away the

[32:55] excessive unwanted chicken I don't want

[32:59] to say sick Qi my good friends yeah Raja

[33:05] Janka he said excessive unwanted yes oh

[33:08] that's a good word to describe

[33:10] meaning the energy that is not so

[33:13] organic with you you try to push away

[33:16] yeah they are happy there they're not

[33:19] happy here

[33:19] you're not happy they're here either

[33:21] yeah so you push away some excessive

[33:24] unwanted she horizontally to the horizon

[33:27] from your top heads yeah third I throwed

[33:31] chest solar plexus yeah lower than ten

[33:36] million is the perineum yeah knees feet

[33:42] yeah there's a push away then all the

[33:45] Reiji is sinking down yeah they're

[33:49] singing down let's see I think I can try

[33:52] to make this to show you then we can

[33:56] practice together okay all right so you

[34:02] have your hands push away

[34:04] excessive one hits you from your table

[34:05] head that I throat chest solar plexus

[34:13] lower than ten weeing knees and the feet

[34:19] so you are clear now you're void no your

[34:22] vacuum now then the right sea from the

[34:25] earth and heaven are sinking down to

[34:29] empower you through sin generated then

[34:32] you send you Meridian and your whole

[34:34] body system protected are connected with

[34:40] where you are okay

[34:43] with Mary are then you home is

[34:47] everywhere yeah everywhere your energy

[34:51] to connect with all this place then it's

[34:52] like you all and it's your property okay

[34:56] mmm-hmm so let's try to do that let's

[35:01] try to do that let's try to do from your

[35:06] home okay from your home okay

[35:09] you always need to start those need to

[35:14] start with yourself

[35:31] start with yourself so you're standing

[35:37] the comfortable should have been like

[35:40] width of your standing little bit wider

[35:43] than the shoulder or narrow you choose

[35:46] the best way that you feel comfortable

[35:48] yeah then in help yeah inhale doesn't

[35:57] matter which way first

[35:58] yeah just natural way inhale so push

[36:01] away access it from one who Chi from you

[36:04] top head third I so your hands are

[36:08] moving like ass movement pattern right

[36:11] throw throat chest solar plexus lower

[36:17] than ten Queen knees the feet all right

[36:25] so your Chi I clean your your your

[36:28] vacuumed your void then the right she

[36:31] comes down he's the way yeah just one

[36:35] second they didn't help you reorganize

[36:40] your own energy pattern alright now you

[36:44] want to make your energy pattern and

[36:46] your room fusing together yeah so this

[36:53] is like your invisible clothes or

[36:55] invisible energy body how to do first

[36:59] after finish yourself second expand

[37:02] yourself to make you shaping like the

[37:06] whole room reversely the whole room are

[37:10] shaping like you right you feel the

[37:12] whole space then this room has top head

[37:16] third eye throat chest all the sections

[37:19] right are you ready

[37:21] feel the whole room for now you shape

[37:24] the whole room then inhale

[37:29] and that I rode chest Solar plexis lower

[37:39] than 10 Queen knees feet now you're

[37:48] connected yeah now keep expanding to

[37:53] feel your whole apartment or your house

[37:57] the whole house looking like you Robert

[38:01] or Smith or Jane done inhale top head

[38:08] that I throat chest solar plexus lower

[38:17] than 10 Queen knees feet all right

[38:24] of course afterwards you can have a very

[38:27] strong affirmation to speak loud Oh

[38:32] Simon you say I am healthy I am

[38:37] protected I am blessed

[38:40] I am the best okay hmm I think that's

[38:47] very straightforward okay now let's do

[38:50] this with different places

[38:55] okay different places to put our energy

[39:03] there to give the prayer energy to that

[39:08] place for the people there okay hey

[39:12] let's the see of course first let's try

[39:18] to do New York yeah so we bring our

[39:21] energy there and try to reorganize the

[39:24] energy better over to New York okay

[39:27] let's try that first

[39:34] stop with itself hmm inhale top head

[39:40] that I throat chest solar plexus lower

[39:49] Dan Tien winged knees feet now bring

[39:57] yourself to New York City then expand

[40:04] space shape yourself like the whole New

[40:08] York City inhale talk head third eye

[40:19] throat chest solar plexus NOAA tent in

[40:26] Queen knees the feet the righteous sinks

[40:35] down

[40:37] that's all say together New York is

[40:43] protected and blessed

[40:54] let's try a next one the Washington

[40:59] White House all right hmm

[41:01] we start from America now well because

[41:05] we're in a momentum which is go straight

[41:07] for yourself

[41:08] we're already in a moment and let's go

[41:11] straight to Washington yeah you can pick

[41:15] one of the symbolic muting you know the

[41:20] the big capital a White House go there

[41:24] expand expand grow stronger is stronger

[41:28] bigger shape the same inhale top head

[41:34] that I rode chest Solar plexis no dent

[41:44] in wing knees the feet

[41:54] Washington American is protected and

[42:02] blessed that

[42:07] pray and bless the energies of the whole

[42:10] earth right let's start from myself

[42:16] again yeah let's have again in help

[42:25] ourself top head that I throat chest

[42:32] solar plexus lower than tin wing knees

[42:39] feet now from where you are

[42:47] grow grow grow to save you energy the

[42:52] same as whole planet

[43:01] in help top hand push all the way to the

[43:06] universe third I throat chest solar

[43:13] plexus lower dantien weeing knees feet

[43:23] let's do it three run do it again inhale

[43:28] push away to the universe top head that

[43:33] I throwed chest

[43:38] solar plexus lower than tin ween knees

[43:45] feet one more inhale top head third I

[43:59] throat chest solar plexus lower Dan Tien

[44:06] Queen

[44:08] knees the feet everything in this planet

[44:21] in this universe it's blessed by the

[44:27] University

[44:39] thank you okay so that's the reorganize

[44:59] your energy pattern your organisation is

[45:02] a pattern in the perfect ways yeah so

[45:07] you can use this with your friends yeah

[45:10] with your family members for your office

[45:13] or your property for your car yeah every

[45:22] day we do a couple of times they're very

[45:25] helpful thank you

[45:34] practice and also keep practicing

[45:36] sending the blessings and your loving Qi

The four cycles are an ancient Shaolin Temple practice consisting of four basic movements designed to draw, circulate, and balance chi. They address different aspects of health: the first draws earth and heaven energy, the second releases emotional stagnation through spinal rotation, the third opens the heart and reduces excess heat, and the fourth completes the energy circulation.
The first cycle, 'Tuo Di Tuo Tian,' involves raising your hands with palms up while inhaling (pulling energy from heaven), turning your palms outward and moving them to the sides while exhaling, then lowering them while visualizing chi from your lower abdomen mixing with earth and heaven energy. Repeat for several rounds, focusing on the labor palace points in your palms as energy collectors.
Yes. The four cycles specifically address emotional imbalances. The second cycle targets accumulated emotions and worries by pumping chi through the spine to tonify the kidneys. The third cycle reduces excess heat and agitation by opening the chest and heart center. Together, they help move stuck emotional energy and restore emotional equilibrium.
The labor palace (laogong) is an acupuncture point located in the center of the palm. In qigong practice, it functions as both a receiver and container of chi, collecting universal energy like a bubble. It is activated by bending the middle finger slightly while keeping the other fingers open and relaxed.
The lower dantien is an energy center located in the lower abdomen, below the navel. It is described as a reservoir or 'ball of chi' and serves as the primary storage location for life-force energy in the body. Qigong practices draw chi into and circulate it from the lower dantien to tonify the entire system.
Visualization directs chi with your attention. For example, you imagine pulling a rubber band between your hands and earth, melting snow at the ming men point to flow energy to your kidneys, or opening a window in your chest. These mental images are not metaphorical but energetic instructions that activate and guide the flow of chi through your meridians.
This traditional Chinese medicine term refers to accumulated emotional and physical problems: worries, the five emotions (anger, anxiety, emotional imbalance, sadness, fear), frustrations, and ailments. The second cycle releases these stored patterns through spinal rotation and visualization of energy flowing to the kidneys.
Yes. Peng teaches the four cycles as a foundational practice that is simple in form but deep in meaning. Beginners can start with basic movements and gradually deepen their understanding through consistent practice. Live classes and recorded walkthroughs are available to support learners at all levels.
