100-Day Qigong: Release Stressand Restore Immune Function

Mingtong Gu
Mingtong Gu
Jun 24, 2016
読了 約11分

Master Mingtong Gu, named Qigong Master of the Year by the 13th World Congress on Qigong and Traditional Chinese Medicine, teaches a qigong practice designed to reduce stress, rebuild immunity, and develop resilience through a series of gentle, flowing movements combined with visualization and intention. The practice targets energetic blockages—understood in qigong as the root cause of disease—by opening the hips, activating the shoulders, centering the heart, and connecting consciousness to the body's energy meridians. These movements are accessible to all fitness levels and can be performed sitting, standing, or lying down. The work integrates physical release with emotional processing and visualization of subtle energy, creating what Gu calls "a paradox"—holding tension while simultaneously moving energy to dissolve it.

What Are Energetic Blockages and Why Do They Matter?

Central to Mingtong Gu's teaching is the concept that all disease and suffering originate from energetic blockages—interruptions in the flow of life force (chi or qi) through the body's meridian system. Unlike purely physical tension, these blockages are understood as subtle obstructions that prevent vital energy from moving freely through the body's tissues, organs, and consciousness. According to Gu's framework, releasing these blockages addresses the root cause of suffering, not merely its symptoms.

When you move with the awareness and intention Gu teaches, you are not simply doing stretches or exercises. You are "awakening" dormant energy and creating channels for it to flow. This requires a specific quality of attention—what Gu calls "mindfulness with gentle acceptance and compassion." The physical movement is only half the equation; the mental intention and the willingness to feel sensation without resistance complete the work.

This understanding differs from Western biomechanics, which focuses on muscle tension and joint mobility. Here, the teacher is inviting you to feel the *energetic sensation* underneath and alongside the physical sensation, and to trust that by opening the physical body you simultaneously open subtle pathways for healing.

Hip Rotation: Opening the Foundation of the Body

The first major movement in the practice is hip rotation, designed to open the hip, sacrum, and lower back—areas where Gu identifies deep tension and energetic blockage. The setup is simple: hands rest on the hips just below the diaphragm, feet about shoulder-width apart, and the body lowers into a comfortable squat.

From this position, Gu cues students to shift the hip to the right, then to the front, then to the left, then to the back, creating a complete circle. The movement is slow—"as slow as you can," Gu emphasizes repeatedly—and the upper body remains straight and stable while the hip rotates beneath.

The instruction includes a crucial note: "Some area some movement might be more challenging even painful." Rather than avoiding this sensation, Gu teaches that you should "continuously move with mindfulness with a gentle acceptance compassion as well deeper intention purpose to open open release the blockages." This is not pain avoidance; it is conscious engagement with areas of tension.

After several rotations, Gu instructs the reversal of the movement, continuing to deepen awareness of sensation in the hips, legs, and feet. The slower you move, the more you feel; the more you feel, the more energy activates and moves. Once the movement completes, Gu cues you to notice the new sensation and the connection between your feet and the earth beneath you—grounding the work into the foundation of the body.

Why Does Movement Feel Like Energy Awakening?

A key teaching in this practice is the relationship between physical sensation and energetic activation. When Gu says "the more you feel the sensation more the energy is moving more the energy is moving the more life you're awakening," he is pointing to a direct link: awareness of sensation = activation of energy = life force increasing.

This is not metaphorical. In qigong philosophy, contracted muscles, tight fascia, and resistant tissues block chi circulation. When you consciously relax those tissues while maintaining attention, you create space for energy to move. The sensation you feel is the tangible, physical expression of that energy moving where it has been stuck.

Gu also teaches that emotional and mental blockages are held in the physical body and must be released through it. By moving with intention and feeling into areas of discomfort, you are simultaneously releasing stress tension and the deeper blockages that cause disease.

Shoulder Squeeze and the Paradox of Release

The second major movement is the shoulder squeeze. Standing with feet together, arms extended to a 45-degree angle on both sides, you keep the elbows as straight as possible and initiate a squeezing motion from the shoulder blades. The palms push inward as if the shoulder blades are "kissing each other," then push outward from the base of the palms. This in-and-out rhythm continues, building intensity.

Gu cues this movement multiple times: "in out in out in out," establishing a rhythmic, hypnotic quality. After several rounds, the movement slows and you hold the position, experiencing the intense sensation of your shoulders, arms, and chest muscles engaging.

Here Gu introduces what he calls "a paradox"—the central paradox of deep energy work: "You feeling the tension at the same time the strong energy deeply releasing the tension the inner block." In other words, by holding a strong contraction with full awareness and intention, you allow energy to penetrate and dissolve the very blockage causing the tension. This is not push-through pain; it is conscious, compassionate engagement with resistance, trusting that attention and gentle effort will move what is stuck.

Opening the Hands and Gathering Subtle Energy

After the shoulder squeeze, Gu invites you to soften the movement and gradually turn the palms forward "as if you're hugging the subtle energy in front of you continuously gathering inward in front of you now towards your naval inwardly gathering inwardly." This is a shift from contraction and activation to reception and integration.

The hand position is not random. In qigong, the palms and the space they enclose are understood as receptive. By facing the palms forward and creating an embracing gesture, you are literally drawing subtle energy from the environment into your energy field. This is visualized as "hugging the subtle energy" and gathering it inward toward your core, your naval center, which in Eastern medicine is a major energy hub.

This gather-inward phase is essential to the full cycle: activate, open blockages, and integrate the newly flowing energy into the body's energy centers.

Spinal Rotation and the Integration of Whole-Body Connection

The practice then moves into spinal rotation. Gu cues: "Slowly rotating your spine from the hip low back middle back upper back," rotating into the left side, holding, then slowly returning to center and repeating. The movement emphasizes awareness traveling up the spine—from the hip and sacrum through the low back, middle back, and upper back, and eventually to the shoulders and head.

Each rotation includes a hold and a relax phase. During the hold, you allow the stretch to deepen while maintaining calm attention. During the relax phase, you soften the effort and allow the spine to release further, "noticing the subtle energetic sensation feeling inside of you around you."

By rotating from different sections of the spine, you are systematically opening blockages throughout the vertebral column and the energy meridians associated with each spinal level. This prepares the body for deeper heart centering work that follows.

Heart Centering: The Quality of Healing and Loving-Kindness

After the spinal rotations, Gu guides the hands gradually toward the heart and chest, embracing "the inner sensation feeling of your heart." This marks a transition from physical release to emotional and spiritual integration. The heart, in qigong and Eastern medicine, is the seat of consciousness, presence, and the quality Gu calls "big heart energy."

Gu instructs: "Opening opening your arm opening the soul energy in front of you around you now gathering the soul energy connecting with the quality of healing the quality of loving kindness and the quality of joy inner joy continuously opening opening the pure energy of your big heart connecting with the pure energy of all the big hearts around you."

This teaching introduces a crucial dimension: the practice is not solely about personal healing. By opening and gathering heart energy, you are connecting with the healing potential that resides in all beings. The quality of the practice shifts from "I am releasing my blockages" to "I am opening to the healing energy that exists everywhere and within all hearts."

This universalizes the practice, making it an act of connection as much as an act of personal healing.

The Sound Frequency and Vibration Activation

Near the end of the practice, Gu introduces a sound frequency—a tonal utterance that activates and expands the gathered energy. The sound is not arbitrary. In qigong and TCM sound healing, specific frequencies are understood to activate different organs and energy centers. As Gu explains, the sound allows for "vibration strengthening activating expansion gathering."

The hands remain open during the sound work, continuously gathering the subtle energy as the vibration resonates through the body. After the sound work, Gu cues a gentle smile directed inward: "Gently continuously smilingly now move your hands down from your brain deeper and deeper connect to your heart."

The smile is not cosmetic. In qigong, the inner smile is a technique for directing compassionate awareness into the body's organs and energy centers, softening resistance and inviting deeper healing.

Descending Energy and Grounding the Practice

The practice concludes by moving energy downward from the brain through the heart, to the naval center, and finally to the hips, sides, knees, legs, and feet. This is essential: the energy that has been activated and gathered is not left floating in the upper body but is deliberately brought down and grounded into the earth.

Gu cues: "Continuously down flowing deeper to your hips sides knees legs in the feet now lending the connection inwardly connection with earth beneath you." This final grounding ensures that the activated energy is integrated and does not leave you unbalanced or overstimulated.

The entire movement arc—from hip opening through shoulder activation, heart centering, sound work, and final grounding—creates a complete circuit: activation, opening, gathering, consciousness work, and integration.

Accessibility and Adaptation

One of the core strengths of the practice Gu teaches is its accessibility. The movements are adaptable for all fitness levels. Those with limited mobility can perform the hip rotations and spinal rotations from a seated position. The visualization and awareness work can be done sitting, standing, or lying down. The key is not the physical range of motion but the quality of attention and intention you bring to whatever range is available to you.

This makes the 100-Day Gong practice available to those recovering from injury, managing chronic conditions, or simply unable to perform vigorous exercise. The healing mechanism operates on energetic and conscious levels as much as physical ones.

The 100-Day Commitment and Long-Term Practice

The "100-Day Gong" framework suggests a sustained commitment to this practice over 100 consecutive days. The benefit of such a commitment is cumulative. Each day, blockages release a little more. Each day, the nervous system becomes more familiar with the state of relaxed activation. Each day, immunity and resilience strengthen as the body's energetic foundation becomes more stable and integrated.

This is consistent with how energy medicine works: consistent practice over time creates lasting change, whereas sporadic practice may produce temporary relief but does not address the root.

Where to Go From Here

If this practice resonates with you, the next steps are to begin practicing these movements regularly—ideally daily for the 100-day period. Pay attention not just to the physical sensations but to the subtle energetic feelings Gu describes: the quality of the energy as it moves, the lightness or heaviness in different areas, the shifts in emotional tone as the practice progresses. Join or explore the Chi Center's online courses and resources, which offer more detailed instruction, longer practice sessions, and additional qigong techniques. Consider attending a retreat or workshop where you can receive in-person guidance and adjustment from experienced instructors. Track any changes in your stress levels, sleep quality, immune function, and overall sense of resilience as you move through the practice. Remember that this is not a medical treatment, and any serious health concerns should be discussed with your primary care physician.

Energetic blockages are interruptions in the flow of life force (chi or qi) through the body's meridian system. In qigong philosophy, these blockages are understood as the root cause of disease and suffering. They can be released through slow, intentional movement combined with visualization and awareness.
Yes. The movements are adaptable for all fitness levels. Hip rotations, spinal twists, and heart centering work can be performed from a seated position or even lying down. The key is the quality of attention and intention you bring, not the physical range of motion.
In qigong, sensation is a signal of energy movement. The slower you move and the more deeply you feel, the more energy activates and flows. By maintaining mindful awareness of sensation, you create space for blockages to release and chi to circulate freely.
The 100-day framework suggests a sustained, cumulative commitment. Benefits build over time as blockages gradually release and the nervous system becomes more familiar with the relaxed activation state. Consistent daily practice is more effective than sporadic sessions.
No. Qigong is a complementary wellness practice, not a medical treatment or diagnosis tool. Before beginning this or any wellness program, consult your trusted healthcare professional. Any health concerns should be discussed with your primary care physician.
