Sihnuu Hetep is a Washington, D.C. native and yoga teacher who holds a 500-hour ERYT and is a Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider. Off the mat she expresses her creativity through dance, writing, cooking and other art forms. She enjoys time with her daughter, Yazi Blu, along with travel, learning new cultures and meeting new people.
Movement has been part of her life since childhood. In 2007 she began an open dialogue with her body on the yoga mat, and she soon found she was receiving more than a workout. After her son's passing, she committed fully to the practice. Self-exploration became an essential tool for her healing as she grieved and continued on her motherhood journey, and her search for spiritual, mental and emotional healing deepened her understanding of universal truths about mind, body and soul.
She completed her first yoga teacher training in 2011 and has kept on learning. In 2015 she completed a 500-hour Yoga Therapy Level I training under the International Association of Yoga Therapy. Her training also includes Trauma-Informed Yoga, Kemetic Yoga, Perinatal Yoga and grief mapping, along with a certification in Grief in the DSM-5. In 2013 she started D.C.'s Karma Yoga Brunch, which gave back to select charity organizations locally and nationwide.
Her teaching draws on somatic movement, nature, self-inquiry and ancient healing. It rests on the principle of self-reclamation: helping people cultivate balance and internal peace on the mat and carry them into everyday life. Her work has appeared in Athleta's Summer 2020 campaign, Mantra Magazine and Essence Magazine, and Yoga Journal included her in its 2020 list of 31 Yoga and Self-Care Resources for Black Yogis.
