Stop Digging Into PastLives in Relationships

Sadhguru

When we fixate on someone's past—whether karmic history or previous lifetimes—we lose the ability to relate to who they actually are in the present moment. Sadhguru argues that finding value in a human being as they exist now, rather than who they were somewhere else or somewhen else, is both more practical and more aligned with spiritual maturity. This shift from past-focused judgment to present-focused appreciation is essential for healthy relationships and conscious living.

Why We Get Stuck Digging Into the Past

A common pattern in relationships—especially among those interested in spirituality and karma—is to explain current dynamics by referencing what came before. Someone asks: what is our past-life connection? Were we together in another lifetime? What karma are we working through? These questions, while rooted in legitimate spiritual frameworks, often become a way of avoiding the actual work of relating to the person in front of us.

Sadhguru addresses this directly: "See if you can find some value in the human being who is sitting in front of you for what he or she is now; not for what they were somewhere." This is not a dismissal of karma or reincarnation as concepts. Rather, it is a practical observation that obsessing over past-life narratives prevents us from engaging with present reality. Whether the past-life story is true or invented, it becomes a distraction from the fundamental challenge of relationship: can we appreciate and work with this person as they are today?

The Problem With Using Karma as an Excuse

There is a particular trap in spiritual circles: invoking past-life explanations to justify present behavior or to avoid accountability. "We must have had a difficult relationship lifetime" can become an excuse for why someone is difficult now, or why a relationship is failing. "This is our karmic pattern" can silence the voice that says, "This isn't working for me, and I need to change something."

Sadhguru's point cuts through this. The karma that matters for your life right now is the karma you're creating and working through in this moment. Whether your partner was once your enemy, your lover, or a stranger has no bearing on whether they respect you today, whether they show up for you now, or whether the two of you can build something genuine together. Fixating on past-life scenarios is a way of stepping out of the present and into speculation—and speculation about the past is a form of psychological escape.

What Does It Mean to See Someone "For What They Are Now"?

To see a person for what they are now requires a specific kind of attention. It means:

  • Dropping the narrative: Stop telling the story of who they were in your past together, or who they were before you met, or who you think they should be. Meet them fresh, repeatedly, as they show up.
  • Observing actual behavior: Not their potential, not their excuses, not your interpretation of their wounds—but what they actually do, say, and how they actually treat you and others right now.
  • Finding what is genuinely valuable: Rather than idealized traits or karmic explanations, what is actually present in this person that makes your life or the world better? This requires real discrimination and honesty.
  • Accepting the present version: This person may grow, may change, may evolve—and they also may not. Can you accept and relate to who they are today without making their transformation a condition of your respect or love?

This shift from past-focused to present-focused is not about denying growth or change. It is about not using the past as a substitute for genuine seeing. When we dig into past narratives, we are often avoiding the vulnerability of actually looking at someone without a filter, without explanation, without excuse.

How This Applies to Everyday Relationships

The teaching extends beyond romantic partnerships. In any relationship—family, friendship, colleague, teacher-student—we tend to carry stories. "She was always like this," "He never changes," "Our dynamic has always been difficult." These narratives, even when they contain truth, become a cage.

A parent might say, "My child has always been rebellious," and then filter everything the child does through that lens, missing opportunities to see new capacities or changes. A partner might say, "We've always had communication problems," and then give up when communication could actually shift. A friend might say, "They've always let me down," and never test whether that is true today.

Sadhguru's instruction is to break this pattern: What value is in front of me right now? Not "What value could they have if they changed?" Not "What value did they have before?" But in this moment, this person as they are, what is genuinely there?

The Spiritual Maturity of Present-Focused Seeing

There is a misunderstanding that spiritual maturity means having deeper access to past-life information or karmic histories. Sadhguru suggests the opposite: maturity is the ability to step out of the pull of the past and meet what is alive right now. This is harder than storytelling. It requires real presence, real discrimination, and real willingness to be wrong about someone.

When we stop digging into the past, we are not denying karma or reincarnation. We are simply choosing not to be controlled by narratives we cannot verify and that, more importantly, cannot serve our growth or the growth of the relationship. We are choosing to work with the only thing we actually have: this moment, this person, these possibilities.

The capacity to find value in someone as they are now is perhaps one of the most practical and most radical spiritual skills. It requires letting go of the need to understand someone through their history, the need to be right about why they are the way they are, and the need to have everything explained. It simply requires looking, listening, and discovering what is actually in front of you.

Where to Go From Here

If this teaching resonates, the practice is straightforward: Choose one relationship that you habitually understand through past narratives—a story about what they were like, how they've always been, what happened between you. For one week, see if you can set that narrative aside. Each time you interact with this person, approach them as if you're meeting them for the first time. Notice what you see when you're not filtering through the story. Notice whether your interaction shifts. Notice whether you find any new value, any new possibility, any new truth about who they actually are right now. This simple shift in attention can reorganize an entire relationship.

No. While reincarnation may be a real framework, fixating on past-life explanations prevents you from engaging with the actual person in front of you. The karma that matters is what you're creating and working through now, not speculative narratives about previous lifetimes that don't change how you should relate to someone today.
Practice meeting the person fresh each time you interact. Set aside the story of what they were like before, what they always do, or why they are the way they are. Instead, observe their actual behavior, actions, and words in the present moment without filtering them through past narratives.
Seeing someone for who they are now means also seeing their actual patterns and choices—including harmful ones. That clarity might lead you to set boundaries, end the relationship, or establish new terms. Present-focused seeing is honest seeing, not naive or unconditional acceptance.
Yes. True spiritual maturity is the ability to accept someone as they are right now while also allowing for the possibility of change. You don't make their transformation a condition of your respect. If change is needed for the relationship to work, that becomes a clear boundary, not a judgment wrapped in a story.
Finding value doesn't mean ignoring flaws or pretending someone is good when they're not. It means looking at what is actually present—even in difficult people—without the filter of historical narratives. Sometimes the honest finding is that this person offers you no value right now, which is also clarity worth respecting.
Absolutely. Sadhguru's point is not against karma as a philosophy but against using past-life or past-narrative explanations as a way to avoid present engagement. You can hold karma as a framework while choosing to focus on the karma you're actively creating today.
