The Secret of Infatuation:Love and Attraction Explained

Deepak Chopra
Deepak Chopra
Oct 19, 2013
6 min de leitura

In this brief meditation and teaching, Deepak Chopra examines the nature of infatuation—the intense, often consuming state of attraction that precedes or accompanies romantic love. Rather than treating infatuation as merely biochemical or superficial, Chopra explores it as a consciousness-based phenomenon rooted in projection, desire, and the search for completion. The talk invites listeners to understand infatuation not as something to dismiss, but as a doorway to recognizing what we truly seek in love and connection.

What Is Infatuation From a Consciousness Perspective?

Infatuation is often dismissed as a temporary state of emotional intoxication—something shallow or unreliable compared to "true love." Deepak Chopra reframes infatuation through the lens of consciousness, suggesting it reveals something profound about how the mind and heart interact. Infatuation is not purely biological; it is a state in which consciousness becomes deeply focused on another person, collapsing distinctions between self and other, reality and fantasy.

When we are infatuated, we see the other person not as they are, but as a mirror of our deepest longings. The intensity of infatuation—the racing heart, the inability to concentrate, the obsessive thinking—arises because consciousness has narrowed its focus to a single point. In this narrowed state, the beloved becomes a symbol of completeness, wholeness, and the fulfillment of what we believe we lack within ourselves.

Why Do We Project Our Ideals onto Others?

A central theme in understanding infatuation is the mechanism of projection. We do not fall in love with a person as they actually exist; we fall in love with our idea of them—a mental image constructed from our desires, fantasies, and unmet needs. Infatuation thrives on this projection because it allows us to experience a sense of potential wholeness without actually having to do the inner work that real intimacy requires.

Chopra suggests that in infatuation, we unconsciously seek in another person what we have not developed within ourselves. If we feel incomplete, we project the quality of completeness onto the beloved. If we feel unlovable, we project infinite lovability onto them. This is not a failure of perception but rather a natural functioning of the mind when it operates from a place of lack or incompleteness.

The beloved in an infatuated state becomes a blank screen onto which we project our highest ideals. They are simultaneously idealized and unknown—we admire the version of them we have imagined far more than the actual person. This is why infatuation can feel so powerful and, paradoxically, so fragile; it depends entirely on the maintenance of a particular fantasy.

How Does Infatuation Differ From Love?

While infatuation focuses inward—on what we can receive, what we lack, how the other person makes us feel—love involves a shift in consciousness toward the other person themselves. In infatuation, we are focused on our own incompleteness and how the beloved might complete us. In mature love, we become aware of the other person's completeness independent of our needs.

Infatuation is essentially self-referential. The beloved is valuable insofar as they fulfill our emotional or spiritual needs. Love, by contrast, recognizes and honors the beloved as a separate consciousness with their own wholeness and worth. This does not mean infatuation is "bad" or something to avoid; rather, it is a stage in the evolution of romantic relationship—one that, if left unexamined, may prevent the deepening that genuine intimacy requires.

Chopra's perspective invites us to see infatuation not as a sign of passion or commitment, but as an opportunity to become conscious of what we are seeking outside ourselves. The intensity of infatuation is a signal that something within us is asking for attention and integration.

What Does Infatuation Reveal About Our Inner Needs?

If we approach infatuation with curiosity rather than judgment, we can use it as a diagnostic tool. What qualities do we consistently project onto those we become infatuated with? Are we drawn to strength because we feel weak? To confidence because we feel insecure? To independence because we fear abandonment? To nurturing because we feel uncared for?

Infatuation becomes a map of our inner landscape. The beloved's characteristics that captivate us most intensely usually point to disowned or underdeveloped aspects of ourselves. When we recognize this pattern, we have the opportunity to cultivate these qualities within ourselves—to move from seeking them outside to embodying them within.

This is not to say that genuine admiration for another person is illusory. Rather, it is to acknowledge that in infatuation, admiration is entangled with projection, and that untangling them is the work of conscious relationship. As we do this work, infatuation naturally transforms. The intensity may soften, but it is replaced by something more stable and reciprocal—actual connection with an actual person.

Can Infatuation Transform Into Genuine Connection?

From Chopra's perspective, infatuation need not be abandoned or transcended harshly. Instead, it can be metabolized—transformed through awareness into something more authentic. This requires a willingness to see the beloved as they are, not as we have imagined them. It also requires the willingness to recognize and integrate within ourselves the qualities we have projected outward.

As we bring more consciousness to infatuation, we may find that the intensity does not disappear but changes character. Rather than being driven by lack and fantasy, it becomes energized by genuine appreciation and mutual recognition. The racing heart and obsessive thoughts give way to a steadier presence and authentic interest in who the other person really is.

This transition is not automatic. Many people cycle through infatuation without ever developing the consciousness to see the mechanism at work. But for those willing to look inward—to ask what they are truly seeking and why—infatuation can become a gateway to more mature and fulfilling love.

Where to go from here

To deepen your exploration of infatuation and love, consider examining your own relationship patterns. What qualities do you most admire in those you are attracted to? Can you identify where those qualities exist within you, even in nascent form? What would it mean to develop those qualities more fully in yourself?

If you are currently infatuated, this is an invitation to bring gentle awareness to the experience. Notice the fantasy. Notice what aspects of yourself you have projected onto the other person. Gradually, allow the actual person to come into focus. See who they really are, and notice what shifts in your feelings and experience.

For ongoing reflection on consciousness, love, and relationship, explore Deepak Chopra's broader work on the seven laws of spiritual success, the nature of desire, and the role of consciousness in shaping our experience of intimacy and connection. The practice of meditation can also help you develop the inner witness that makes all of this conscious recognition possible.

Perguntas frequentes

Infatuation is self-referential and focused on what the other person can provide to fulfill our sense of incompleteness. Real love recognizes the beloved as a separate, complete consciousness worthy of respect independent of what they offer us. Infatuation depends on projection and fantasy; love is grounded in seeing the actual person.
When infatuated, the mind projects its own unfulfilled desires and ideals onto the beloved, using them as a blank screen. This happens because consciousness narrows its focus and seeks in the other person what it perceives as missing within itself. The fantasy feels safer and more compelling than the actual person, at least initially.
Notice which qualities you most admire or are drawn to in someone you're infatuated with. These often point to disowned or underdeveloped aspects of yourself. Ask yourself: Am I drawn to their strength because I feel weak? To their confidence because I feel insecure? These patterns reveal what you are truly seeking.
Yes, infatuation can transform into genuine connection when awareness is brought to it. This requires seeing the beloved as they actually are, not as you've imagined them, and simultaneously developing within yourself the qualities you've projected outward. The intensity may soften but becomes grounded in actual appreciation.
Infatuation is not a failure of consciousness but rather consciousness operating from a place of perceived incompleteness. It's a natural state that offers an opportunity for greater awareness. By bringing consciousness to infatuation—by examining its mechanics—you can understand yourself more deeply and move toward more authentic relationships.
The fading of infatuation's intense, fantasy-driven energy is not necessarily a loss. It signals the opportunity for the actual person to come into focus and for a more stable, grounded form of love to develop. This transition can feel disappointing if you mistake the absence of intense emotion for lack of love.
