Wybalena Organic Farm — 789 The Pocket Rd, Australia
A 170-acre organic farm retreat venue in the Byron Bay Hinterland, NSW
The land was called Wybalena before it was a retreat. It is an Aboriginal word meaning resting place, refuge, and when Julian began transforming the farm into a dedicated retreat venue about ten years ago, he kept the name because it already fit. The farm acknowledges the Bundjalung nation as the people on whose land it stands, and its host brochure includes recommendations for local elders who offer welcome to country ceremonies.
Like many properties in the area, the farm began as a dairy. It later grew bananas, coffee and vegetables, then ran beef cattle and macadamias. Today it produces nothing commercially. It is cared for as an organic farm, with no pesticides or artificial fertilisers, guided by regenerative agriculture, permaculture and biodynamics. A small herd of pasture-raised cattle serves as the part-time lawn mowers, the chickens eat the caterers' scraps, and guests can pick from the fruit trees and native Australian foods as they walk.
The venue sits on 170 acres at The Pocket, with nature trails, a spring-fed dam and a rainforest creek. The Main House is an architecturally designed farmhouse with a caterers' kitchen, a timber table for family-style meals, a lounge with a fireplace, and verandas that open onto a magnesium pool, an infrared sauna and an outdoor fire pit. An XL Odin ice bath and two outdoor showers complete the wellness facilities. A stand-alone 66m2 yoga studio stands footsteps away, with oak floors, high ceilings, exposed rafters and a full wall of windows over the private valleys. It holds 22 people.
Wybalena is booked as a whole, much like a large house rental, by retreat leaders who run their own programs. It has 22 beds across 18 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms, from king rooms with ensuites to self-contained cabins to twin-share rooms. Catering is brought in by each host, and individual guests do not book stays directly. A small team led by owner Julian and Retreat Director Ashleigh looks after the property, and the cleaning team readies it for every booking.
